THE HISTORY OF PPT/FC JAZZ
(Taken partly from book Porin Pallo-Toverit 40 Vuotta, 1934-1974. I try to update this section as often as I can. Translations are only there to give an idea what those weird league names mean...)
1934-1940:
Porin Pallo-Toverit (better known as PPT) was formed 22nd September 1934 at Restaurant Kansa where the first meeting was held. 18 persons were present and chairman of the meeting was Emil Korpela and secretary Oiva A. Johansson.

Emil Korpela was chosen as chairman and Oiva A Johansson as secretary of the meeting.
2§
It was in unison decided to form a team that covers football, bandy and pesäpallo (=Finnish version of baseball with different rules).
3§
Porin Pallo-Toverit was chosen in unison as the name of the team.
4§
Emil Korpela was chosen as the chairman and Oiva Johansson was chosen as the secretary of the team.
5§
V. Hakanen, V. Suominen, S. Turpeinen were chosen as regular members to the board and V. Kavenius and T. Karttunen were chosen as deputy members.
6§
It was decided to join Työväen Urheiluliitto (=Workers SportUnion) via Satakunta section. It was decided that membership fee was 15 FMK. Monthly fee of 2 FMK was also accepted.
7§
The meetings of the team was decided to held whenever it was necessary.
8§
V. Lahti and Reino Elo was chosen as the protocol inspectors.
9§
V Lahti and Oiva Johansson was chosen to football committee. T. Mäkelä and V. Kunttu to baseball committee.
10§
Emil Korpela was chosen to study instructions of registering PPT as quickly as possible.
After meeting everybody was in high mood when they have formed one team to Työväen Urheiluliitto. It would have been perfect to shout ”hey hey” for the new team but it would have not been approriate gesture at public restaurant.

The following persons were present at the first meeting:
Tauno Mäkelä, Veikko Kunttu, Viljo Tanttinen, Veikko Lahti, Henry Elo, Väinö Suominen, Reino Jarvalahti, Emil Korpela, Väinö Hakanen, Aallos Kaarto, Veikko Alm, Pentti Lahti, Sulo Turpeinen, Reino Elo, Vilho Kavenius, Atle Johansson, Oiva Johansson (later known as Oiva Jakamo) and Taisto Karttunen.
The news of the new team spreaded through the grapevine and the team was supported at working class people. Mostly 5th, 8th and Toejoenranta of the city districts were part of forming this new team and the players were known as ”The Boys of Hennala”. It was natural that those districts were involved because the only real football pitch (Porin pallokenttä) was in the vicinity of ”Luntinpuisto”, church and factories.
FIRST CHAIRMAN: EMIL KORPELA (1934-1936, 1946-1947 and 1955-1956)
Emil Korpela was only twenty years old when he was chosen as the chairman of PPT. He was hardworking and sacrificed much of his time for PPT for making it better and better. After three years he resigned and moved to Viipuri but came back after the war. After he came back he wanted to expand PPT to cover also mens and womens basketball, tabletennis and ice hockey. He also gathered funds to the team excellently. He was also the first Honoured Chairman of the team and he collected lots of badges of merits from different sports. He died 7th March 1970 at the age of 63 to injuries he got in a car accident.
4th October 1934 was played the first game. Opponents were Porin Pyrintö and the scoreline was 3-2 (1-2) to Pyrintö.
The protocol dated 5th December 1934 tells that the following kind of jersey was chosen (suggested by A Lindqvist): jersey is bright blue and the collar and the ends of the sleeves are grey. The emblem of the team is situated at the left side of the chest.
14th April 1935 Emil Korpela suggested that women should be allowed to join PPT and it was in unison agreed to form a womens section. It still took 10 years before the first meeting was held at 16th February 1945. Women started playing basketball in 1948 and their first game was in Helsinki at 25th January 1948 against Helsingin Visa/Kullervo (teams united for this match) and PPT won 32-9. Newspapers said: ”The women players from Pori were excellent and they deserved to win. Vehkaoja made most points but Suominen was definitely the best player.”
10th June 1936 Vilho Turpeinen was chosen as the chairman of the team.
In 1937 PPT won Satakunta championship. During this season PPT also tried to win a place to Suursarja (=The Big League) after a succesful play-offs they played a game against Turun Pyrkivä but luck wasn’t on their side. The result was 3-3 (5-3 after extra-time to Pyrkivä). Team included (2-3-5): A Honkaranta / V Lepistö, V Suominen / V Alm, A Stenman, A Sjöblom / E Lepistö, V Kunttu, T Mäkelä, U Tilljander, V Lahti.
14th February 1938 was decided that PPT will pay 30 FMK as per diem allowance for those who have to take leave from their daywork because of a game.
1940 during the Winter War players Reino Elo, Aallos Kaarto and Atte Johansson died in the battle.
TAUNO MÄKELÄ
Tauno Mäkelä was very respected among other players. He was a classy player who had authority over other players. He worked twenty years for PPT. He recalls: ”We played at Porin Pyrintö but we thought we weren’t equal with others. Emil Korpela came to us and asked us to join new team: ’Why don’t you Boys from Hennala join us?’”. And so they joined back in 1934. Mäkelä compares thirties to seventies (the interview was made in seventies) by saying: ”At that time we literally lived on the pitch. We had to buy our gear because the team didn’t have enough money for that. We didn’t moan about it back then. Now players are wanting more and more.”
”Politics was very much involved in sport back then. The gap between right wing and left wing was wide. That still didn’t stop being friends with each others and we played lots of friendlies. In autumn 1940 we played a friendly with Porin Kärpät. The income of the game was given to the families whose members had died in war. I was in the army during that time and I wasn’t given a leave so I didn’t attend the game. After this incident I could go to any game I wanted.”
Mäkelä was very careful about discipline in the team. If someone had been drinking on Saturday there was no way he could have let the player to attend a game on Sunday. ”Sometimes I had to be tough with the guys but I think it was just an advantage to the team and solidarity inside it. Usually guys understood that and there were no problems because of that” he remembers.
”I have to admit that I haven’t had time to follow nowaday football but I think that tactically players are better although in my time players gave always 100%. Money is too big issue nowadays and that’s why they don’t take playing too seriously. Unfortunately.”
1941-1950:
In 1941 & 1943 during the war Reino Tommikoski and Arvo Stenman died.
In 1945 PPT won Häme section of Maakuntasarja (=Province League) and they had their chances of entering Suomi-Sarja (=Finland League) next spring.
In 1946 PPT entered the Suomi-Sarja.
1948 PPT played in two leagues: TUL and Suomen Palloliiton Sarja (=Finnish Football Association league). In TUL league PPT were fifth while in SPL league they faced a relegation.
1950: PPT played Linköpings KIF and lost 5-2.
1951 PPT played at TUL'S Suursarja (WSU's Big League) and they were third (also in the league were teams TPV, Vk.KP, TPT and Lie.Ki).
1952 PPT played at TUL's Suursarja (WSU's ”Big League”).
1953 PPT played at TUL's Suursarja (WSU's ”Big League”). PPT won the league but when they continued to play-offs of Suomi-Sarja (Finland League) luck wasn’t on our side. Only win was against EIF (4-1).
EINO NORDLING
Eino Nordling is best known in Pori as ”Osku”. He still follows (in seventies) football in Pori and he’s a keen follower of PPT. He was 25 years in the team only playing five years of first team football because leg injury stopped his career. He worked with juniors during the war years. He says that nowadays managers are in completely different situation than in war years. ”It’s easy to gather professional literature about coaching and there courses for the managers. During the war time it was different. You had to learn everything and you had to think tactics by yourself. There were some books available but they were quite poor,” he says and continues: ”I remember I was twice in a short courses about coaching. First was in Helsinki in 1940 and it took only two weeks. Second course was at Vierumäki in 1948 and I was there with Tauno Mäkelä.”
According to him being a manager back then wasn’t the same kind of a job like it was in the seventies. It wasn't enough just to coach you had to do almost everything by yourself. ”You had to be some sort of a gopher. Meaning go for this and go for that. There wasn’t just enough people working for the team.” He also worked as a referee for ten years. He remembers how he once forgot his watch at home so he had to take time from the church clock.
He remembers that travelling was the most difficult during the war time. They travelled usually by train because cars were in more important use back then. ”I remember when we went to play to Turku. We left Pori on Saturday at 11AM and were at Turku at 2AM next morning. Then a game on Sunday afternoon and then back to Pori which took a horrible long time. To Kajaani and back to Pori took usually approximately three days.”
EERO VIRTANEN
One of the most important figures in Pori during the four decades he spent with the club. He was in the club from the beginning back in 1934. ”We were young and excited about the new club. We were playing at Porin Pyrintö before joining PPT and we thought Pyrintö didn’t give football the value we wished for. Of course there were troubles when a new club is formed. Only Emil Korpela had some experience,” he says. New club had some financial troubles and they thought of many ways of collecting money. Dance was one way. ”Balls were one source of income, Mattsson’s place at Toejoki and at Hyvelä. We put a ball in there and with these money we got along.” He remembers one funny incident: ”Once when we were about to open a gate for one ball there weren’t anyone else from the club except me and my wife. She nevertheless started to sell tickets and police came and asked where are others if there are problems with the crowd. We just said that they will be soon here and they came, though quite a late.”
English navy was also bringing colour to football scene in Pori. ”I think it was the first post war ship that came to port of Pori in Mäntyluoto. English sailors said that they wanted to play against us. We had a permission to organise such a game and a dance ball afterwards. We marketed the game with a slogan ’The Performance of English Football Skills’. Over 800 paid to see English play. Well, they couldn’t play well because they were sailors and we noticed that the first thing they touched the ball and we loosened up a little bit and won ’only’ 7-1.”
VEIKKO TRANBERG
Veikko was very gifted especially in ice hockey and bandy but he also played football and pesäpallo. He was very respected among the team and he always said that team spirit is the main thing if you want to be successful. He was a fighter and never gave up and that’s why other players respected him very much. It wasn’t rare to see match reports where newspapers comment: ”Tranberg broke through the defence all by himself – and scored.” He died when he was only 45 years old.
1951-1960
1954 PPT were 20 years old. In football TUL (=WSU) and SPL (=FFA) agreed to a temporary co-operation and the leagues were united. Satakunnan Maakuntasarja (=Province league of Satakunta section) games were disastrous and PPT got relegated to so called Kyläsarjaan (=”Village League”). Here’s the table of season 1954:

1955 PPT came back to Maakuntasarja (=Province League). In the final PPT won Ruosniemen Visa 11-1.
1957 PPT played at Maakuntasarja (=Province League).
1958 PPT played at Maakuntasarja (=Province League) but they had to fought really hard to stay there: in the autumn round they beat RTU 9-4, Kraft 3-2, Popa 4-2 and Iirot 5-2. In Finnish Football Association Cup TKV won the meeting. Suomen Palloliitto (FFA) paid Eino Nordling a trip to see Football World Cup at Sweden.
1961 PPT played at Aluesarja (=”Area League”). In the final game against RTU we drew 0-0 which gave RTU a place in the Maakuntasarja (=Province League).
PAULI VIRTANEN
Pauli Virtanen was a player, manager, coach and everything else you can think of. He was at PPT from the beginning. ”I think PPT was only two months old when I joined in. Lot has happened durig the trip from the beginning.” He played approximately 20 years and was ten years as a manager. He remembers that in the old days there were lots of action: ”There were no free nights at all. Every night you found something to do for the club.” He also took care of the gear of the players: ”During those days we patched up ice hockey sticks and bandy sticks if it was possible. Hammer was one very important tool we had. We didn’t have enough money to buy new sticks if you could fix the broken one up. The same goes for football boots and footballs.”
He remembers that the team spirit was something unusual back then: ”It was a great feeling back then. Everybody did their best for the club.” He says that even nowadays (in the seventies) if you’re a manager you aren’t respected that much you should be. ”They put money to everything else except for good managers and coaches. I mean a person weho really knows what he’s doing and he’s capable of coaching and get the team play as best as they can. I think it’s not enough if you’ve played years ago you can just jump into the managers shoes. I think being a player-manager is the worst solution. I think PPT, and other teams in Pori, need better coaches and managers. I think they’re not qualified enough.”
AINO VIRTANEN
Mrs Aino Virtanen was very important figure when PPT formed a womens section back in 1945. ”I think that womens section nowadays (in the seventies) is still respected. We have tried to help the club financially by organizing different occassions.” They have f.e. collected funds for junior players.
1961-1970:
1962 PPT played the spring time very well: they beat Karhut 2-0, RTU 3-1 and Roima 3-0. The autumn round wasn’t that good and we had to settle for a fourth place while TPV were promoted.
1964 PPT played at Maakuntasarja (=Province League).
1967 PPT played at Suomi-Sarja (=Finland League) and they played rather well but couldn’t get a promotion: they beat TPV 1-0, HPK 4-1, drew 0-0 with Valkeakoski PS-44, won Pyrkivä 3-2 and TaPa 1-0. We lost to TuTo 1-3 and to RU-38 0-3.
1968 PPT played at Suomi-Sarja (=Finland League). PPT started well and beat Valkeakosken Kosken-Pojat 1-0, they drew 1-1 with VPS and lost 1-3 to TaPa. Jämsänkosken Ilves won us 2-0 but we beat Valkeakosken PS-44 1-0. VaKP was easily beaten 4-2 and Pihlava 7-0. Then came a 2-2 draw with VIFK and then we beat Seinäjoen sisu 9-1.
1969 PPT decided to concentrate only on football and to drop every other sport from their agenda just to raise the standard of football in Pori.
1970 PPT sees the ice hockey team coming to an end. In football PPT played at Second division with following results: vs. TuTo = 3-2, vs. HPK = 2-1, vs. ÅIFK 2-2, vs. VaKP = 1-1, vs. PS-44 = 1-1, vs. IF-FK = 0-0, vs. Pyrkivä 2-0, vs. Ässät = 2-1, vs.TaPa = 2-0, vs. Rauman Pallo = 2-0, vs. TPV = 2-2, vs. ÅIFK = 0-1, vs. TuPk = 5-1, vs. PS-44 = 3-0, vs TPV = 2-1, vs. TaPa = 2-1, vs. RaPa = 3-0, vs. Pyrkivä = 3-3, vs. Ässät = 1-1. One lousy defeat denied us a straight promotion to Mestaruussarja (=Finnish Championship League). We came third with 37 points while winners TPV got 38 and second TuTo also 37. PPT still had a chance when they played a two-legged game with TuTo who’s going to play-offs with second from bottom from FCL. It was a hard game which was played at Tampere. After 90 minutes the game was 0-0, first extra-time ended also 0-0 and at the last minute of the second extra-time referee Taisto Enckell noticed a handball in the box and showed a penalty kick for TuTo. Juha Söderman scored a goal and TuTo won 1-0. This was the closest chance so far for PPT to enter the Mestaruussarja (=Finnish Championship League).
1971-1980:
1972: PPT played at Western Section of Second Division and came 10th with points of 17 (winner had 32).
1973: PPT played at Western Section of Second Division and came 4th with points of 26 (winner had 33).
1974: PPT played at Western Section of Second Division.
1979: PPT announced their "Project 84" which meant that PPT will play first division football by the season 1984.
1980's: PPT made a historic achievement in Finnish football. They raised from the third division to Mestaruussarja (top division in Finland) in three years. That's one season per division.
1981-1990:
1987: PPT were sixth in the league which was by then their best achievement.
Unfortunately I haven’t found proper documentary about history of PPT from 1974 to 1991. I’ll update these years as soon as possible.
1989 was the last Mestaruussarja season in Finland. It was decided to change the name (by sponsor Oy Veikkaus Ab) to Veikkausliiga. PPT played at First Division.
1990 was the first Veikkausliiga season in Finland. PPT played at First Division and won the league and promotion back to top division.
1991-2000:
28th November 1991 PPT changed their name to FC Jazz. Quite many were shocked after this announcement. Newspaper Satakunnan Kansa wrote: ”…the name they chose is absolutely horrible. I haven’t met a single person who was glad about the change of the name. What was wrong with the name PPT?…” (In my opinion, I think after a while there is not a single person who want the old name back. FC Jazz is all in all a good name…)
26th April 1992 was the first league game with a new name. Team included: Koivistoinen, Sulonen, Koskikangas, Riippa, Rantanen, Laaksonen, Karjalainen, Alatensiö, P.Nieminen, Suikkanen (46.R.Nieminen), Heinonen.
17th July 1993 FC Jazz gave musician Nigel Kennedy (who was performing at Pori Jazz Festivals that summer) a jersey with a number 414 and name Kennedy at the back. Nigel thanked and joked that red isn’t quite the colour he likes (he’s an Aston Villa fan).
FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE (1993):
3rd October 1993 was THE DAY for Jazz when 11 193 spectators saw Jazz beat second place MyPa 6-3 in a very thrilling match.

27th July 1994 was the 60th anniversary game against English team Ipswich Town. John Wark scored the only goal of the game and Ipswich won 1-0.
30th October 1994 Jazz reached League Cup final but lost 2-0 to HJK. Team: Juhola / Koskikangas, Riippa, Karjalainen, Rantanen / Leivo-Jokimäki (75.Nieminen), Piracaia, Alatensiö, Puputti (83.Sulonen) / Luiz Antonio, Ruhanen
28th October 1995 Jazz reached Finnish Cup final but lost 1-0 to Haka. Team: Viitanen / , Koskikangas (46.Rodrigo), Nieminen (68. ??), Sulonen, Rantanen / Laaksonen (56.Alatensiö), Riippa, Piracaia, Puputti / Ruhanen, Luiz Antonio

15th November 2003: Matti Tuori will continue to be the chairman of FC Jazz for the next two seasons. Tuori hasn't had an easy time as in the spring he had to negotiate with the debtors and tax authorities a contract that satisfied all parties. Thanks to him, FC Jazz could play in Veikkausliiga this season.
25th November 2003: FC Jazz and other teams in Pori want two artificial football pitches to recreational area called "Isomäki".
3rd December 2003: City of Pori has agreed to support FC Jazz's application of re-organization (if that's the correct word). Application is now at municipal court. The biggest creditor is Lounais-Suomen Verovirasto (=South-Western Tax Office) who haven't received €351 000 worth of tax money. The total debt of FC Jazz is now €690 000.
13th December 2003: The situation of FC Jazz is getting worse after South-Western Tax Office and Satakunnan TE-Keskus didn't accept the application of re-organization. Still director Jan Walden of Veikkausliiga is positive about Jazz: "We have followed the team for the past three years and I think financially Jazz's situation now is better than year ago. I don't think this will affect Jazz's application of league-license." Jazz have time until 12th January 2004 to give more explanations about their situation to municipal court.
28th January 2004: Veikkausliiga board announced that Jazz have to withdraw their debt reorganization application before 2nd February 4PM. If they do that, Jazz will get the much wanted license. If they don't, KooTeePee gets Jazz's place in Veikkausliiga. Jazz have made a credible plan how to get out of the debts without reorganization.

29th February 2004: FC Jazz gathered enough money from the sponsors that it will give the team much needed time to breathe. Tax authorities have announced that Jazz will shorten their debts with six-figure sum in the near future. Tomorrow FC Jazz will pay €100 000 to the tax authorities.
8th March 2004: After Jazz paid 100 000 euros to tax authorities it was Work Ministry's (työministeriö) turn to demand their money back. They want approx. €50 000. Jazz chairman Matti Tuori says that this doesn't affect Jazz's preparations for the forthcoming season. "We'll play in the league next summer and deal with this threat," he said.
23rd March 2004: FC Jazz have paid the Ministry of Work the needed €50 000. The rest €16 000 were about to be paid at the end of May.
February/March 2004: Jazz played well at League Cup finishing second at their section.
May 2004: Jazz started with convincing win over Tampere Utd (3-1) and they have twice lead the table.
7th June 2004: Jazz recruited striker Mikael Muurimäki to help the attack line.
2nd October 2004: Jazz ended to 13th place in the table and will play a two legged play off with first division runners-up's IFK Mariehamn.
October 2004: Jazz lost to IFK Mariehamn in a two-legged play-off and were relegated to first division. Debts are approx. 700 000 euros.
31 March 2005: FC Jazz vanished from the football scene because of financial difficulties. Sub-team FC Jazz-j continue at the lower divisions.

FC JAZZ DREAM TEAM OF ALL TIMES
That's gotta be the team Jazz had in 1993 when they won their first championship title. This line-up is widely recognised as one of the best line-ups a Finnish team have ever had. The last game of the season was played at Pori stadium on 3rd October 1993 and we we're playing MyPa who were second and still had a chance to win. There were approx. 12 000 fans watching the game and oh, boy, it was great. We beat MyPa 6-3 and the celebrating was about to start after the final whistle.... Unfortunately midfielder Juha Riippa, who's a sort of an icon in Pori, was injured during this season and didn't play a single game. That's why I include him as the midfielder who replaces f.e. Miika Juntunen in every other game. He was very important player...

Important full-back. Started at PPT (previous name for Jazz) in 1986 and played in title winning teams in 1993 and 1996. Was transferred to Inter after season 2000. After spending two years in Turku he came back to reinforce Jazz's back four.

Born 30th November 1970 (Garca-Sao Paolo, Brazil)
He's one of the famous brazilians (well, at least famous to us) who put FC Jazz into new dimension. He was a brilliant striker who scored very important goals. He won the title in 1993 and in 1996 in Jazz. He has played also for Mainz in Germany and for HJK and now he's at MyPa.

Piracaia has been very important for Jazz during these years. He first came to Jazz in 1992 with Rodrigo and Tulio and fans loved him at once. In his first season Jazz were third in the league (1992) and in his second they won the title. He also was one of the main architechts when Jazz won the title in 1996.
